Art. One of life’s great pleasures.

Artists in residence

When we were designing our coffee shop, we were keen to make use of the amazing wall space we have to support local artists. So we created an art wall.

Each month we give the wall to an artist of our choice to showcase their work. Artworks are for sale, with all proceeds going to the artist.

Artist in residence: Melissa Wraxall

Melissa is a Bath painter with a B. Art Ed. from N.S.W. University Sydney and an MFA from Bath Spa University.

This exhibition, Lamella, focusses on a small selection of her most recent abstract expressionist oil paintings, which are characterised by eye-popping contrasts of colour, and a diversity of textures from delicate and translucent glazes, to thickly rendered impasto gestures.

The titles of these paintings are free associations (related to subjects as diverse as biology, space, culture or politics) derived from aspects of the works which emerged as they took shape.

In January this year Melissa was a prize winner in the Commonwealth Art Prize. Her installation “Flux” was selected for the Bath Spa Alumni Exhibition celebrating the opening of the new Locksbrooke Campus, in March, 2020. She also has work in private collections in Australia, Canada and the UK.

“I feel very privileged to be amongst the first artists to exhibit at Dexter’s and I hope that in these worrying times, my paintings are able convey a sense of freedom and optimism.” Melissa Wraxall, July 2020

We’re delighted to be able to share Melissa’s work with you both here and in the coffee shop - we’re big fans!
